Stay Informed . . .

Have a Plan . . .

Post emergency phone numbers by all telephones and teach children how to dial 911.

Prepare before disaster strikes:

Make sure that all adults in the home know how to turn off the water, gas and electricity at main switches. Do not attempt to restore gas service yourself if it has gone out. Call BGE at 1-800-685-0123.

Keep family records and other important documents in a water and fireproof safe. Inexpensive models can be purchased at most hardware stores. Read more on family readiness at the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Since your pets may not be allowed in shelters, make plans for your pets.

Plan now for relatives who may need assistance, are elderly or disabled.

Learn First Aid and CPR

During disasters, it may be difficult for emergency services personnel to reach everyone that is injured quickly. Plan ahead by learning basic first aid and CPR. Keep a well-stocked first aid kit at your home. Include items such as bandages, antiseptic ointment, soap, hand sanitizer, gloves and sunscreen.

Work as a Community

Working together before a disaster occurs will better prepare a community to deal with the aftermath. The Community Emergency Response Network provides education, training and volunteer opportunities for individuals who are interested in being proactive to community-wide emergencies.
