Paramedic Pathways

The Paramedic Pathways Program is a joint effort between Howard County Public Schools, Howard County Community College (HCC) and Howard County Fire and Rescue (HCFR) to encourage and facilitate students interested in emergency medical services.

Interested students should contact their high school guidance counselor or call the Pathways Coordinator at 410-807-2288.

What is the Program About?

Students accepted into the program take Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (EMT-B) classes at the Applied Research Laboratory in Clarksville. Students return to their high school after morning EMT-B classes for the remainder of the day. After high school and successful completion on EMT-B, students can attend Howard County Community College and get their A.A. degree in Paramedicine at no charge. Prerequisites and paramedic curriculum are designed to last two years.

Who is Eligible?

Howard County Public High School seniors with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 and a "C" or better in math and english are eligible. Interested students should be responsible, professional and motivated.

What is EMT-Basic Class Like?

EMT-Basic class is an intense, college-level course that will require more reading and studying than your average high school course. Some of the topics covered include medical terminology, human anatomy, medicine administration, spinal immobilization, and bleeding control. The class prepares students for real-life situations through ample skill practice.

Is it Really Free?

Yes! The program is funded by HCFR. Textbooks, college tuition and necessary prerequisites are provided to enrolled students.

Will I Have a Job After Graduation from HCC?

Howard County Department Fire and Rescue cannot guarantee a job for students that successfully complete the program. However, HCFR is actively recruiting paramedics and hopeful that the program will provide a "pathway" for local students to work where they live.
