Members Sought from Council Districts 1 and 3 for Howard County’s Animal Matters Hearing Board

ELLICOTT CITY, MD – County Executive Ken Ulman is currently seeking individuals from Council Districts 1 and 3 who are interested in serving on the Animal Matters Hearing Board. Board members are responsible for hearing and rendering decisions on appeals of citations issued for violations of animal control laws; issuing orders and declarations related to enforcement of animal control laws; making recommendations on standards and procedures for operation of the animal control facility; and annually reviewing the proposed budget for the operation of the animal control facility.

The Board is comprised of seven members, who serve five years terms, and must include one licensed veterinarian practicing in Howard County and three members experienced in animal matters, with no more than two from the same County Council District.

To be eligible for consideration, candidates must be Howard County residents, 18 years of age or older, have an interest in animal control, and be able to attend the Board’s meetings which are held the third Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. and located at the Animal Control Facility, 8576 Davis Road in Columbia.

Applicants should send a resume and a brief letter explaining why they want to serve on the Board to: Howard County Government, Department of County Administration, Attn: Susan Smith-Bauk, 3430 Courthouse Drive, Ellicott City, MD 21043. The names of eligible applicants will be submitted to the County Executive for approval and then to the County Council for confirmation.

As part of the Police Department, Animal Control investigates animal cruelty cases, rescues endangered animals, accepts unwanted pets, administers a pet adoption program, conducts humane education programs and operates the county’s animal shelter.
