CARDBOARD RECYCLING

DID YOU KNOW...
1 ton of recycled paper saves 17 trees!

GENERAL RECYCLING TIPS

  • Cardboard recyclables must be clean.
  • Remove food, plastic liners, waxed paper or styrofoam packaging material from inside boxes.
  • Oops - WAXED CARDBOARD can't be recycled...no recycler wants it. Put it in the trash...not with your recyclables.

CURBSIDE COLLECTION

Once a week curbside collection of UNLIMITED corrugated CARDBOARD is provided to residents living in single family homes and most townhomes in Howard County. Because corrugated cardboard boxes take up so much space in the recycling containers, residents in apartments, condominiums and other multi-family homes are urged to take your cardboard to the Alpha Ridge Landfill Residents' Convenience Center, or check with your employer to see if they have a cardboard recycling container you could use.

YES we accept...

  • Corrugated cardboard (used to hold paper, small appliances, or boxes from warehouse stores). Smaller boxes, such as cookie, gift boxes and soda cartons are considered MIXED PAPER - see MIXED PAPER for appropriate tips.

NO we can't accept...

  • plastic bags
  • styrofoam pieces in boxes
  • stacked bundles higher than 6 inches
  • ceramics

HOW TO prepare Cardboard for curbside collection...

  • Remove all contents from box.
  • Flatten all boxes (and bundles) to conserve space.
  • Cut boxes to fit into the 2 feet x 4 feet x 6 inch opening in the recycling truck (i.e., the size of a large bath towel and thickness of a pillow).
  • Place in paper bags, OR...
Leave flattened cardboard in stack under other recyclables, OR...
Place in open-top recycling bins, OR...
Tie or bundle with string (stacked no higher than 6 inches), if preferred.
  • Please make sure the bag or bin and its contents are secure from the wind.

Inclement Weather

During inclement weather, every effort will be made to continue to provide for scheduled collections. If collections are cancelled due to snow, ice, or other severe weather, pick-up will be made the following week on your scheduled recycling day, if possible, or when road conditions permit. Call 410-313-6444 for cancellation and makeup information.

Holidays

Recycling collections are not made on the following six (6) holidays:

  • New Year's Day **
  • Memorial Day *
  • Independence Day *
  • Labor Day *
  • Thanksgiving Day *
  • Christmas Day **

* If your regular recycling day falls on one of these days, collections will be made the following week on your scheduled recycling day.

** If your regular recycling day falls on one of these days, collections will be made on the following day. When either of these holidays falls on Saturday or Sunday, collections will be made the following Monday.
