You may not realize how local county government is part of your everyday life. From the time you get up in the morning and all through the night as you sleep, Howard County services are available to you and your family. In this section, you will learn interesting facts while you have fun exploring some of the many ways we serve you.
CIVIL WAR TRAILS...Many historic sites are located in Howard County. Local, state and national governments work to preserve these sites so future generations can learn more about the places and events that shaped their community. Many of these site have been restored through cooperative efforts led by the Department of Recreation and Parks. During the Civil War, Ellicott City and other sites around the County played host to troops from both the North and South. Follow this map to see where their trails may have led and the sites you can still visit today. SAFETY FIRST... The Department of Fire & Rescue is made up of both career and volunteer employees who work out of eleven different fire stations throughout the County. Learn some important everyday safety tips as Buzzy & Flash take you on a tour of our firestations. THE ADVENTURES OF MR. BILL...The County Executive and County Council work together to create laws that help protect the safety and welfare of county residents. Tag along as Mr. Bill works his way through the government process to show you the way a bill becomes a law.
