LICENSING

The Office of Consumer Affairs licenses two types of businesses:

• Door to Door Sales: The name of the specific law is the Solicitor and Peddlers Law. This statute requires that before a salesperson can knock on your door in Howard County they must first register with the Office. The cost of the license is $100.00 per year which runs from July 1 to June 30. The cost of this license is not prorated during the course of the year.

• The second type of economic activity is the licensing of tow trucks which tow vehicles from private property without the permission of the owner of the vehicle. This law is called the Trespass Tow Law. It requires that the tow companies register with the Office and abide by certain rules to help protect the owners of the vehicles. The fee for a license is $150 per calender year and is not prorated. The year is a calender year which runs from January 1 to December 30.
